How to Tie a Hanover Knot
Hanover Knot Tying Steps
- Begin with the wide end on your right and the seam exposed. Have the end hang 10-12 cm (4-5 inches) lower than your hoped-for ending position.
- Bring the wide end under the narrow end to the left.
- Take the wide end in front of the narrow end to the right.
- Take the wide end up through the neck loop on the right.
- Bring it down to the left.
- Take the wide end around the back to the right.
- Take the wide end up and over the knot in the center.
- Bring it down through the neck loop to the left.
- Cross the wide end in front of the knot to the right. Use a finger to hold this band open.
- Take the wide end up behind the neck loop and down towards the center.
- Pull the wide end through the band (Step 9).
- Pull to tighten and adjust.
About the Hanover Knot
The Hanover Knot is a large tie knot that begins with the seam facing out in an ‘upside down’ starting position – similar to the Grantchester Knot. The end result is a full knot that works well in business and formal settings. We suggest using a longer-than-average men’s tie as the knot requires a substantial amount of fabric.
