How to Tie a Van Wijk Knot

Van Wijk Knot Tying Steps

  1. Begin with the wide end on the right with the tip of the narrow end just above your navel.
  2. Cross the wide end over the narrow end to the left.
  3. Take the wide end under the narrow end to the right.
  4. Bring it across the front to the left.
  5. Wrap it around behind the narrow end to the right.
  6. Bring it across the front to the left. Keep it slightly under the wrap made in Step 4.
  7. Wrap it behind the narrow end to the right.
  8. Bring it across the front to the left. Keep it slightly under the wraps made in Step 4 and Step 6.
  9. Take the wide end up into the neck loop from underneath.
  10. Bring it down through each of the three loops in the front. Loops made in Step 4, 6 and 8.
  11. Pull down on the wide end to tighten. The first and second loop should show slightly underneath the third loop.

About the Van Wijk Knot

The Van Wijk Knot is named for its creator, Lisa Van Wijk. Rumour has it that she wanted to create the world’s tallest knot… or at least one that looked tall and could still be worn. The result is a tall cylindrical knot with just the right amount of artistic flair.

Be sure to keep the loops loose because the wide end needs to move through them easily.
